The honest guide to Malta jeep tours — what you get, what you don't, and when it's worth it
Jeep tours are one of Malta's most popular activities — a convoy of 4x4s through the countryside, southern cliffs, and coastal tracks. They're genuinely fun, but understanding what you're getting helps you choose well and avoid disappointment.
Typically a group excursion in a convoy of 4–8 vehicles, covering countryside tracks, clifftop paths, and coastal areas. Duration: 4–8 hours. Usually includes swimming stops, a picnic or lunch break, and several viewpoints.
Popular routes:
Available through Booking, GetYourGuide, Viator, or direct booking from offices in Sliema, St Julian's, and Bugibba.
Prices: approximately €40–70 per person for a full-day tour. Half-day: €25–45.
How to choose a good operator: Read Google and TripAdvisor reviews carefully — look for small groups (max 20 people), English-speaking guide, clear itinerary, and recent positive reviews.
Convoys can be noisy. If you're in a convoy of 8 jeeps with loud music — it's more party than nature experience. Better operators run small, quieter groups.
The "off-road" is mild. Maltese country tracks are narrow and atmospheric but not extreme 4x4 terrain. Don't expect Africa. The jeep experience is more about atmosphere and access than genuine off-roading.
Many "hidden" spots are actually well-visited. Blue Grotto? Ħaġar Qim? These are on every tour. A genuinely hidden Malta requires a local guide, not a convoy.
If you hire a car (from €25–40/day), you can see everything a jeep tour covers — plus significantly more, at your own pace. Disadvantage: you have to drive, navigate, and deal with Malta's notorious parking situation.
Jeep tour is better for: people without a licence, couples wanting a social organised day, groups who prefer not to think about logistics.
Rental car is better for: families with children (your own schedule), photography enthusiasts (stop anywhere), and those who prefer calm over a full group experience.
Book at least 2–3 days ahead in the peak season (April–October). Good tours sell out fast. And always confirm: does the vehicle have air conditioning? In July and August, a closed jeep without AC in 38°C heat is genuinely miserable.
