Mdina, Three Cities, Golden Bay, Marsaxlokk — all within 30–50 minutes of Malta's capital
Valletta's central location makes it one of the best bases on Malta — from here you can reach virtually anywhere on the island in 30–50 minutes by bus or Bolt. Here are eight day trips worth making.
Mdina is Malta's former capital — a walled medieval city closed to cars. Narrow streets from the 15th–18th centuries, palaces, baroque churches, and rooftop cafés. Best in the morning before tour groups arrive. Don't miss Fontanella Tea Garden — cake and tea with a panoramic view over all of Malta.
Rabat next door has St Paul's Catacombs and St Agatha's Catacombs (entrance from Parish Square, approx. €6). Ancient underground burial chambers with early Christian art.
Time needed: 4–5 hours. Bus 51 from Valletta, 45 minutes.
Three fortified towns opposite Valletta are one of Malta's most rewarding surprises. Birgu (Vittoriosa) is the most atmospheric — Fort St Angelo, the Maritime Museum, 16th-century streets. Cross on the ferry from Barrakka Lift at sunset.
Time needed: 3–4 hours. Ferry: €1.50.
The Sunday fish market at the harbour (best before 10am). Then a walk and seafood lunch at one of the waterfront tavernas. The colourful luzzu fishing boats are photographed by everyone — justifiably.
Time needed: 4 hours. Bus 119 or Bolt approx. €12.
A boat ride along the southern coastal cliffs — sea arches, grottos, deep blue water. Trips approximately €9, lasting 20–25 minutes. Best in the morning when sunlight illuminates the caves from inside. Bus 138 from Valletta to Żurrieq, then boat.
Malta's most beautiful sandy beach plus the largest tourist town in the north. Mellieħa has a great clifftop church, good restaurants, and easy access to Anchor Bay and Popeye Village. Combine: morning beach, midday Mellieħa, afternoon return. Bus 41 or 42. Full day trip.
The northern tip of Malta is the launching point for everything: ferries to Gozo (€4.65 return), excursion boats to Blue Lagoon, Comino. Great snorkelling at Paradise Bay.
Two prehistoric temples on clifftops above the sea (approximately 5000 years old). Ticket approx. €10, visited under a protective tent canopy. Stunning setting at sunset.
Bus 138, alight at Ħaġar Qim. Time needed: 2–3 hours.
The most ambitious option — but very doable. Ferry from Cirkewwa (25 min), rent a scooter in Mġarr (approx. €25/day), and have all of Gozo. Citadel in Victoria, Ggantija temples, Xlendi bay, Ramla Bay beach. Return on the last ferry (around 10pm).
Is it worth it? Absolutely. Gozo is a different pace — quieter, greener, more authentic. Even one day gives you a meaningful taste.
