Tarxien Temples: Malta's Forgotten UNESCO Wonder

Older Than You Think

In the unremarkable town of Tarxien, surrounded by a residential neighbourhood, stand four interconnected megalithic temples built between 3600 and 2500 BC. They predate Stonehenge by centuries and the Egyptian pyramids by decades.

Tarxien Temples are part of the Megalithic Temples of Malta UNESCO World Heritage Site, yet they receive a fraction of the visitors that go to Ħaġar Qim or the Hypogeum. This is partly because they don't photograph as dramatically and partly because they're in a somewhat gritty suburb. Their loss is your gain.

What's Here

The complex comprises three main temples and the remains of a fourth.

Highlights to find:

• The Fat Lady statue — only the lower portion (the original is in the National Museum of Archaeology in Valletta), but the scale and context are striking. One of Malta's most iconic prehistoric figures.
• Animal relief carvings — bulls and pigs carved into limestone blocks, surprisingly detailed after 5,500 years.
• Sacrificial altars — with traces of animal bones and flint tools still visible.
• Spiral motifs — the characteristic decorative pattern repeated across Maltese megalithic sites.

Entry: €10 adult, €5.50 child (6–11) — or purchase a combo with the Hypogeum on heritagemalta.mt (valid 7 days) Hours: Tuesday–Sunday, 9am–5pm. Closed Mondays, Christmas Day and Good Friday. Time needed: 45–60 minutes

Combining with the Hypogeum

The Tarxien Temples are 8 minutes on foot from Ħal Saflieni Hypogeum. The ideal strategy:

1. Book the Hypogeum for an early session (e.g. 9am)
2. Walk to Tarxien Temples when your session ends (around 10am)
3. Spend an hour at the Temples, then head to Valletta for lunch
4. In the afternoon, visit the National Museum of Archaeology to see the original artefacts from both sites in their full context

Why Bother if It's "Not Instagram-Worthy"?

Tarxien doesn't have the dramatic clifftop setting of Ħaġar Qim or the underground mystery of the Hypogeum. But this is one of the few UNESCO sites where you can actually touch the same stones that people used in rituals 6,000 years ago — no glass barriers, no audio tour preamble about "no flash photography," no coach parties.
