Wardija Ridge is a rocky ridge on Malta's western coast, between Mtahleb and Rabat. On the flat limestone surface, cart ruts are preserved, pairs of parallel grooves carved in rock with a standard gauge of about 1.4 metres. Hundreds of such ruts exist across Malta and Gozo, but their origin remains one of Maltese archaeology's greatest mysteries.

Who carved them?

Theories range from the Neolithic to the Bronze Age. The most popular says the grooves were worn by wooden cart wheels transporting stones or agricultural produce over soft limestone. Other hypotheses include irrigation systems, boat-sliding tracks, and ceremonial roads. Dating is difficult as rock cannot be radiocarbon dated.

Solitude on the cliff

Wardija Ridge is one of Malta's least visited places. No tourists, no ticket sellers, no barriers. Just wind, garrigue (low cliff vegetation), and views over the western cliffs and sea. An ideal spot for a solitary walk and contemplation.

Practical tip: Drive to Mtahleb, then walk over the rocks (20 minutes). There are no marked paths, so use GPS or an offline map. Avoid after rain (slippery on limestone slabs). Bring water.

Podwodny raj

Cirkewwa Reef to rafa przy samym północnym końcu Malty, obok terminalu promowego. To jedno z najlepszych i najłatwiej dostępnych miejsc do nurkowania na całych wyspach maltańskich, z wejściem prosto z brzegu (shore dive). Rafa schodzi do 18 metrów, a za nią zaczyna się piaszczyste dno.

Wrak holownika Rozi

W 1992 roku holownik MV Rozi został celowo zatopiony na głębokości 36 metrów jako atrakcja dla nurków. Wrak o długości 40 metrów jest dziś porośnięty koralowcami i zamieszkany przez setki ryb. To jeden z najczęściej nurkowanych wraków na Malcie, dostępny nawet dla początkujących z instruktorem.

Łuk skalny

Obok rafy znajduje się Cirkewwa Arch, naturalny łuk skalny pod wodą na głębokości ok. 15 metrów. Przepływanie przez łuk z turkusową wodą wokół i światłem wpadającym z góry to jedno z najbardziej fotogenicznych doświadczeń nurkowych na Malcie.

Praktyczna rada: Nurkowanie z brzegu (shore dive), brak opłat za wejście do wody. Szkoły nurkowe z Bugibby i St. Julian's organizują wycieczki. Snorkeling jest łatwy po południowej stronie rafy (płytko, dobre widoki). Parking przy terminalu promowym.

An underwater paradise

Cirkewwa Reef lies at Malta's northernmost tip, beside the ferry terminal. It is one of the best and most accessible dive sites on all the Maltese islands, with direct shore entry. The reef descends to 18 metres, beyond which the sandy seabed begins.

The tugboat Rozi wreck

In 1992, the tugboat MV Rozi was deliberately scuttled at 36 metres' depth as a diving attraction. The 40-metre wreck is now encrusted with corals and inhabited by hundreds of fish. It is one of Malta's most frequently dived wrecks, accessible even for beginners with an instructor.

The rock arch

Near the reef is the Cirkewwa Arch, a natural underwater rock arch at about 15 metres' depth. Swimming through the arch with turquoise water all around and light pouring from above is one of Malta's most photogenic diving experiences.

Practical tip: Shore dive; no fees for water entry. Dive schools from Bugibba and St. Julian's organise trips. Snorkelling is easy on the reef's south side (shallow, good views). Parking at the ferry terminal.
