Comino Blue Lagoon: how to go, when to skip it, and what to check first

Comino's Blue Lagoon is not a place to visit blindly anymore. The water is still spectacular, but the day depends on three things: landing access, boat logistics and arrival time.

Check the access system first

The Malta Tourism Authority operates an online booking system for Blue Lagoon landing access. The official portal explains free landing passes, QR codes and the rules for visitors who want to set foot at the lagoon.

Before planning, check the current rules on blcomino.com and the official terms and conditions. If the slot or limit rules change during the season, the official portal wins over any old travel article.

How to get there without losing the day

From Malta, the shortest logic is usually the northern departure area around Ċirkewwa or Marfa. Cruises from Sliema and St Julian's can be convenient, but they often turn Blue Lagoon into a full-day commitment.

From Gozo, Comino can work well, but do not automatically squeeze it into the same day as a full Gozo loop. Ferries, transfers and sunlight all need room.

When Blue Lagoon makes sense

• early or later in the day, when the densest traffic is easier to avoid,
• outside the highest seasonal peak, if your dates are flexible,
• with a land backup such as Red Tower, the northern beaches or the Popeye viewpoint if the sea changes the plan.

What not to promise yourself

Do not assume an empty lagoon, perfect weather or a return at any random hour. Blue Lagoon is iconic, but it works best when you do not force the entire day around it.
