The Blue Lagoon — Malta's icon, where turquoise water with visibility up to 30 metres forms a natural pool between Comino and Cominotto. Since 2023, a 4,000 daily visitor cap protects this fragile ecosystem.
The Blue Lagoon is a narrow channel between Comino and tiny Cominotto islet, where shallow, crystal-clear water shifts from turquoise to emerald. This isn't an ordinary beach — it's a geological phenomenon. The white sandstone seabed reflects sunlight, creating a natural pool effect with underwater visibility reaching 30 metres.
For centuries, the Lagoon was known only to fishermen and smugglers. Its shallow waters — barely 1-5 metres deep — provided an ideal hideout. During the Knights of Malta's rule (1530-1798), the channel served as a watchtower vantage point. The nearby Santa Marija Tower (1618) guarded precisely this passage between the islands.
It wasn't until the 1970s, when Malta began developing tourism, that the Lagoon became famous. For decades, there were no restrictions — at peak season, up to 8,000 people would descend on this tiny area daily.
Uncontrolled tourism began destroying the ecosystem. Posidonia oceanica — seagrass that serves as home to hundreds of species — was retreating. In 2019, scientists from the University of Malta published an alarming report on seabed degradation.
Since 2023, a daily limit of 4,000 visitors has been in place. Cameras monitor traffic, and ferry operators must book time slots. It's a controversial but necessary decision — the Lagoon is slowly recovering.
On the western side of the Lagoon, accessible only by kayak, a small cave leads to a hidden beach inside the cliff. It's one of the least-known spots on Comino. And the best time to visit? September — tourists have left, the water is still 26°C, and the light is golden.
Tip: Take the first ferry (9:00 AM) or the last one (4:30 PM). At noon the Lagoon is packed — but at dawn you'll have it almost to yourself.
