“Not every "beach" has sand. An honest ranking of the best swimming spots across the entire archipelago.”
Malta is not Greece. Real sandy beaches are rare here and look nothing like the brochure photos. To avoid disappointment — here is an honest ranking of the best swimming spots in Malta and Gozo.
The water really is that turquoise shade you've seen on Instagram — that part is true. But the "beach" is literally a few metres of rock with thousands of people on it. Go before 9:00 am or after 5:00 pm. Ferry from Sliema or Malta: around €15 return.
The most beautiful beach in the entire archipelago. Rust-red sand, emerald water, genuine peace and quiet. A completely different world from Malta. Essential stop on Gozo — reach it by bus or car from Victoria (about 15 min).
The longest sandy beach in Malta — over a kilometre. Shallow water, ideal for children. Packed on summer weekends. Arrive before 10:00 am. Bus 41/42 from Valletta.
Golden sand, easy access (bus 223), full infrastructure (cafes, sun lounger hire). Sunsets here are genuinely spectacular. Busy in season but large enough to absorb the crowds better than Blue Lagoon.
Right next to Golden Bay, but 200 steps down keeps the lazy ones away. The result: far quieter and wilder in character. My personal favourite on the whole island. No facilities — bring your own food and water.
A natural pool carved into limestone rock in the south of the island. People jump from several metres into turquoise water. Zero shade, zero facilities. Bring an umbrella, plenty of water and a hat. Get there by Bolt or car from Marsaxlokk.
A picturesque bay on Gozo — rocks, yachts and a few restaurants with sea views. Better for snorkelling and evening drinks than sunbathing. A great option for a relaxed evening.
A narrow rocky canyon leading down to the sea — one of the most striking views on Gozo. Excellent snorkelling, but the descent is steep and demanding. Almost always empty.
A small sandy cove at the northernmost tip of Malta, near the Gozo ferry terminal. Often missed by tourists — worth a stop on the way to the ferry.
A quiet fishing town in the east. Promenade, seafood restaurants, fewer tourists. Rocky shores but clean water and a well-sheltered swimming area.
