Upper Barrakka Gardens — The Best View in Valletta

You stand on the terrace, and in front of you spreads Grand Harbour — one of the largest natural harbours in the Mediterranean. Across the water you can see the Three Cities: Birgu, Senglea and Cospicua, with the mighty Fort St. Angelo standing guard at the harbour entrance. It is the view from the postcards. And it is free.

The Cannon Salute at Noon (and 4 pm)

Directly beneath the terrace is the Saluting Battery — a historical cannon emplacement. Every day at noon (and again at 4 pm), soldiers in period uniforms load and fire the cannons. There is a bang, there is smoke, there are wide-eyed tourists. Stand at the railing 10 minutes early to get a good spot.

How to Get There

Two ways:

• On foot from the City Gate: Enter through the City Gate, walk along Republic Street, turn towards the gardens — you'll see them on the left near the end of the peninsula.
• By Barrakka Lift: If you're arriving by ferry or you're at the waterfront, the lift tower takes you up to garden level in 25 seconds. Cost: €1 going up (walking down is free). If you have a Valletta–Sliema ferry ticket, the lift is free.

When to Come

At sunset. The walls of the Three Cities across the harbour turn golden. It is the golden hour in its purest form. Stay until dark — the night view with Fort St. Angelo illuminated is equally beautiful.
