San Niklaw Bay — home to Comino's only hotel (1962-2019). The abandoned Comino Hotel buildings still stand over the quiet bay that once buzzed with life.
In 1962, the Comino Hotel rose above the peaceful San Niklaw Bay — the only hotel on the island. For 57 years, it defined tourism on Comino. Guests arrived by ferry, and staff lived on-site. The hotel had a pool, tennis court, a sea-view restaurant, and its own beach.
In the 1980s and 90s, the Comino Hotel was a jewel of Maltese tourism. European tourists seeking tranquility — far from the bustle of Sliema and St. Julian's — found paradise here. But over time, standards declined, and growing competition couldn't be beaten without investment.
In 2019, the hotel was permanently closed. Since then, the buildings stand abandoned — slowly consumed by rust and wild vegetation. Redevelopment plans exist but face resistance from environmentalists who want to protect Comino from development.
San Niklaw Bay is an excellent snorkelling spot. Clear, calm water and a rocky shoreline create ideal conditions for observing marine life — from octopuses to colourful sea sponges.
