Crystal Lagoon — a hidden lagoon on Comino's west coast with underwater visibility up to 30 metres. The lesser-known sister of Blue Lagoon, accessible only from the water.
While thousands of tourists flock to the Blue Lagoon, just a few hundred metres away hides its quieter sister — Crystal Lagoon. Enclosed by vertical cliffs on three sides, accessible only from the water (by kayak, boat, or swimming), this lagoon offers something the Blue Lagoon can no longer provide: peace.
Underwater visibility reaches 30 metres — among the best conditions in the entire Mediterranean. The seabed is covered in white sand and rocky reefs, and in the crevices live octopuses, moray eels, and hundreds of colourful fish. Divers call this place "underwater cinema" — there's that much to see.
Crystal Lagoon formed through thousands of years of marine erosion. Waves carved through coralline limestone — the same rock that all of Malta is built from — until a closed bay with a narrow entrance from the sea emerged. During storm season (October-March), waves force their way into the lagoon with tremendous power, continuing to shape its form.
Best time: early afternoon, when the sun is high and illuminates the lagoon floor. Bring a mask and snorkel — you won't regret it.
