The Sanap Cliffs (130 m) offer one of Malta's best coastal walks. The name derives from the Maltese word senapa, meaning mustard. Spectacular sunsets.
The Sanap Cliffs (Tas-Sanap) rise approximately 130 metres above the Mediterranean on Gozo's southwest coast, between the villages of Munxar and Sannat. The name comes from the Maltese word "senapa", meaning mustard, which once grew abundantly on these slopes. Today the cliffs are covered in garrigue typical of dry, wind-exposed Mediterranean habitats.
The hiking route from Xlendi Bay to the Sanap Cliffs (and onward to Ta' Cenc) is regarded as one of the best cliff walks in all of Malta. The path follows the cliff edge with views over the open sea, the islet of Filfla on the horizon, and rocky coves far below. The full Xlendi-Sanap-Ta' Cenc route takes about 2-3 hours one way.
The western exposure makes Sanap one of the best spots on Gozo for watching sunsets. The cliffs are relatively uncrowded, so you can enjoy peace and quiet surrounded by wild nature.
Practical tip: Make a loop: bus to Xlendi, walk the cliffs to Sannat, then bus back to Victoria. Bring water as there are no signs or shops along the route.
