The Blue Hole at Dwejra is a natural rock pool connected to the open sea by an 80-metre tunnel. It is ranked among the top 10 dive sites in Europe.
The Blue Hole is a circular natural rock pool roughly 10 metres in diameter, carved into the limestone cliff at Dwejra on Gozo's western coast. Beneath the surface, the water averages 15 metres in depth, and an approximately 80-metre tunnel connects the pool to the open sea. It ranks among the most famous dive sites in the entire Mediterranean basin.
The Blue Hole formed over thousands of years of marine erosion, which hollowed a chimney through the coralline limestone. The pool walls drop almost vertically, creating a natural shaft ideal for divers. Water clarity is exceptional, with visibility reaching 30-40 metres in good conditions, making underwater colours strikingly vivid.
Divers can swim through the tunnel to the open sea, where the cliff wall drops to over 60 metres. The underwater face is covered with sponges, corals, and anemones. Barracuda, octopus, moray eels, and schools of fish are regularly spotted. Snorkelling within the pool itself is excellent too, as the water remains calm even in mild swell.
Practical tip: Even if you do not dive, come to peer into the Blue Hole from the cliff. The contrast between the dark blue pool and the turquoise sea is stunning. Best light for photos is in the morning.
