The Inland Sea is an inland lagoon connected to the open sea through an 80-metre tunnel in the cliff. Fishermen have sailed their luzzu through the tunnel for centuries.
The Inland Sea (Qawra) is a shallow lagoon roughly 60 metres across, enclosed in a rocky amphitheatre on the Dwejra coast. It connects to the open sea through a natural tunnel approximately 80 metres long, pierced through the limestone cliff. In calm conditions, small fishing boats and tourist vessels pass through the tunnel, emerging into the spectacular open waters of the Mediterranean.
For generations, local fishermen have kept their luzzu in small rock-cut boathouses carved into the cliff. Each fishing family has its own boathouse, passed down through the generations. The sight of luzzu gliding in and out of the dark tunnel is one of Gozo's most photogenic subjects.
The lagoon formed when a sea cave collapsed. The bottom is sandy-rocky with crystal-clear water. Snorkelling in the lagoon is safe even for beginners as the water is sheltered. Inside the tunnel and outside the cliff, marine life is exceptionally rich.
Practical tip: Tourist boats run from April to October, costing about EUR 5 for a 20-minute trip. Do not go out on days with strong westerly wind, as seas outside the tunnel mouth can be dangerous.
