Anchor Bay (the Popeye Village bay) is an excellent snorkelling spot with rocky formations and clear water. Accessible free from the bay's western side, outside the amusement park.
Anchor Bay is the bay where Popeye Village stands. But beyond the theme park, the bay itself is an excellent snorkelling spot. The water is clean, sheltered from wind by rock walls, and full of marine life. From the bay's western side (outside the park), you can enter the water for free.
Underwater you will find rock formations, small caves, sea grass (Posidonia oceanica), and rich fauna: wrasse, octopus, seahorses, red mullet, and flatfish. Depth ranges from 1 to 8 metres, making it ideal for both beginners and experienced snorkellers.
The name "Anchor Bay" comes from anchors found on the seabed. They were probably from ships that sheltered here from storms over the centuries. Some have been dated to the time of the Knights of Malta.
Practical tip: Enter the water from the bay's western side (not from Popeye Village). Bring a mask, snorkel, and water shoes. Parking on the cliff above the bay. 10 minutes by car from Mellieha. Best visibility in the morning.
