Fort Manoel on Manoel Island in Marsamxett Harbour is a 1726 fort. Used as the Great Sept of Baelor in "Game of Thrones". Restored, with views of Valletta.
Fort Manoel stands on Manoel Island in Marsamxett Harbour, facing Valletta. Built in 1726 under Grand Master Antonio Manoel de Vilhena, it is considered a masterpiece of 18th-century military engineering. During World War II it was severely damaged by bombing and fell into ruin.
In 2010, the fort gained new life as a filming location for "Game of Thrones". The fort's courtyard served as the square before the Great Sept of Baelor in King's Landing. It was here that Ned Stark was publicly accused of treason in one of the show's most memorable scenes.
Since 2012, Heritage Malta has been restoring the fort. Today it is partially open to visitors, with excellent views of Valletta across the harbour. Manoel Island, once isolated, is connected by bridge to Gzira and Tigne.
Practical tip: Guided entry only (check Heritage Malta for dates). Walk across the bridge from Gzira (5 minutes from the bus stop). The view of Valletta from the fort walls is among the best on the island.
