The Victoria Lines are a 12km fortification line from 1897 crossing Malta from Fomm ir-Rih to Madliena. The British built it along the natural Great Fault escarpment. Never used in battle.
The Victoria Lines are a line of fortifications running across the entire breadth of Malta, from Fomm ir-Rih on the west coast to Madliena on the east. Length: approximately 12 kilometres. Built by the British between 1870 and 1897, they were designed to protect the southern part of Malta (with its harbours and naval base) against a potential landing on the northern beaches.
The British exploited a natural geological formation — the Great Fault, a tectonic escarpment running across the island. This natural cliff, 60-80 metres high, formed an ideal defensive line. It only needed the addition of forts, walls, artillery positions, and signal towers. The system included 4 forts (Mosta, Mgarr, Bingemma, Madliena) and several smaller fortifications.
The Victoria Lines were never used in combat. The development of naval artillery and aviation in the late 19th century rendered land fortifications strategically obsolete. Today the line is a popular hiking route (the Victoria Lines Trail), passing through wild landscapes with panoramas of both sides of the island.
Practical tip: The full Victoria Lines Trail takes 5-6 hours (12 km, moderate difficulty). The best section for a short walk is Fort Mosta to Bingemma with views over Mgarr. Bring water; there is no shade. Reach it by bus to Mosta or Mgarr.
