Ramla Bay is Gozo's largest beach with distinctive orange-red sand. Beneath the dunes lie ruins of a Roman villa from the 1st-4th century AD with 19 rooms.
Ramla Bay (Ir-Ramla l-Hamra, literally "red sandy beach") is Gozo's largest and most famous beach, stretching roughly 700 metres along the northeast coast. The distinctive orange-red sand colour comes from high iron oxide content in the sediments. It is the only beach in Malta with such an intensely warm hue.
At the western end of the beach, buried under layers of sand, archaeologists discovered the ruins of a Roman villa dating from the 1st to 4th century AD. Excavations in 1910-1911 revealed 19 rooms, including a small bath with a hypocaust underfloor heating system and mosaic fragments. These are among the best-preserved Roman remains on Gozo. The villa was likely a summer residence of a wealthy citizen of Gaudos, the Roman name for Gozo.
The hill above the beach is traditionally identified with Calypso's Cave, where Homer's nymph Calypso supposedly held Odysseus captive for seven years. A Calypso sculpture on the promenade commemorates the myth. The beach is protected as a Natura 2000 site, with sand dunes hosting rare endemic plant species.
Practical tip: The sand colour is most vivid in the morning under low-angle sunlight. The beach is family-friendly with a gentle slope into the water. Sunbeds cost around EUR 6 per day.
