Tal-Mixta Cave is a large grotto on a cliff overlooking Ramla Bay. Used as shelter since prehistory. In 1743, its entrance was walled up, leaving openings for cannon.
Tal-Mixta Cave is a large, wide-mouthed grotto perched on the cliff above Ramla Bay. The name "Mixta" derives from the Maltese word "Mxett", meaning wintering place, as shepherds sheltered cattle here from winter cold and wind since time immemorial. The cave offers one of Gozo's most Instagrammable views: a panorama of Ramla Bay framed by the cave's natural rock opening.
Archaeological traces indicate the cave was inhabited from prehistoric times. Its strategic cliff-top position provided both shelter and an excellent lookout point. In 1743, as part of coastal defence improvements, the cave entrance was walled up with stones, leaving only two openings for cannon aimed at the sea to protect the bay from enemy ships.
Today the cave is easily accessible on foot from the road above Ramla Bay (about 15 minutes). There is no entry fee. The spacious interior provides welcome shade on hot days, and the view from inside the cave onto the beach is absolutely phenomenal.
Practical tip: The best light for photos is in the morning when the sun is behind you, illuminating the beach. Bring a torch to explore the deeper parts. Combine with a visit to Ramla Bay and Calypso Cave.
