Ċirkewwa ferry terminal — Malta's edge, where the Gozo ferry departs. A 25-minute crossing with views of Comino and the Blue Lagoon. Bridge or ferry? The debate continues.
Ċirkewwa ferry terminal is the northwestern tip of Malta — beyond it lies only the sea, Comino, and Gozo. This is where the Gozo Channel Line ferries depart, linking Malta with Gozo for decades. The crossing takes 25 minutes and is one of the most beautiful short voyages in the Mediterranean.
Shortly after leaving port, Comino appears on the left with its distinctive Santa Marija Tower on the summit. Between Comino and the tiny islet of Cominotto, the turquoise waters of the Blue Lagoon glisten — Malta's most famous bathing spot. To the right, the cliffs of northern Malta drop vertically to the sea. On the horizon, the silhouette of Gozo emerges from the haze with the dome of Ta' Pinu Basilica and the Citadel walls.
Proposals for a bridge or tunnel between Malta and Gozo surface from time to time. Gozitans are divided: some want convenience, others fear a bridge would destroy the island's character — its tranquillity, slow pace, and sense of being cut off from the world. For now, the ferry remains the only connection.
Practical tip: Ferry every 45 minutes in season. Foot passenger: EUR 4.65 (one way). Take the upper deck, left side — best view of the Blue Lagoon.
