Gardjola Gardens in Senglea are bastion gardens with an iconic turret carved with eyes and ears "watching over" Grand Harbour. The best view of Valletta from water level.
Gardjola Gardens are small gardens atop a bastion in Senglea (L-Isla), one of the Three Cities. The most famous feature is a 17th-century watchtower (gardjola) decorated with carvings: an eye, an ear, and a crane (vigilance). These symbols meant the sentinel sees, hears, and is alert, guarding the entrance to Grand Harbour.
The gardens offer one of the best views of Valletta: a panorama of the entire waterfront, the Anglican Cathedral, Upper Barrakka, and the defensive walls. The view from water level (not from above as at Barrakka) gives an entirely different perspective on the city.
A monument in the gardens commemorates the Great Siege of 1565. Senglea (then l-Isla) was one of the key defensive positions. Residents, including women and children, fought alongside the knights. The name "Senglea" comes from Grand Master Claude de la Sengle.
Practical tip: Free entry. Reach it by water taxi from Valletta (EUR 2) or by bus to Senglea. The gardens are small (10 minutes to visit), but the view and gardjola are worth the trip. Combine with Fort St. Angelo in Birgu (10 minutes' walk).
What does the watchtower in Gardjola Gardens symbolize?

The Three Cities (Birgu, Senglea, Cospicua) are the cradle of Malta's maritime history. Birgu (Vittoriosa) was the knights' first seat. Senglea (L-Isla) is famous for the Gardjola Gardens with the stone watchful eye.
