Red Tower (St. Agatha's Tower) is a 1649 watchtower on Marfa Ridge with a panorama of Gozo, Comino, and the Blue Lagoon. Painted red since the 18th century. One of 13 Lascaris watchtowers.
The Red Tower (St. Agatha's Tower) is a massive fortification atop Marfa Ridge in northern Malta, built in 1649 under Grand Master Lascaris. It belonged to a system of 13 coastal watchtowers placed around Malta's entire coastline, designed by the engineer Floriani. Painted red since the 18th century (probably to be more visible from the sea), it became one of Malta's most recognisable landmarks.
From the rooftop terrace, a panorama extends to Gozo, Comino, the Blue Lagoon, Mellieha Bay, and Malta's northern coast. On clear days, Sicily is visible (96 km). It is one of the best viewpoints on the island, yet little visited by tourists.
The tower fell into ruin in the 20th century. In the 1990s, Din l-Art Helwa (Malta's equivalent of the National Trust) carried out a full restoration with volunteer labour. Today the tower can be visited during their opening hours.
Practical tip: Entry EUR 2 (donation to Din l-Art Helwa). Drive to Marfa Ridge or walk 20 minutes from the Cirkewwa bus stop. An ideal spot for sunset when Gozo glows golden.
